COLLEGE MARKETING (5125)

Grades 10-12 Full Year, 1 Credit Students may elect to take the course for 6 college credits from LIU Post. Prerequisite: None

From Madison Avenue to Hollywood! Explore the psychology of promoting and selling goods and services. Learn how and why Great Adventure and Disney World sell their amusement parks to you, the consumer. Learn how major stores such as Abercrombie & Fitch and McDonald’s target customers and develop marketing strategies for those customers. Students examine consumer behavior and government regulations pertaining to the business world. Current events, trends and case studies will be integrated and evaluated throughout the classroom discussions. Students will explore the world of social media and how it is implemented in marketing. In addition, students will create a marketing plan and presentation for a product that they invent for the Smithtown marketplace. Guest speakers and hands-on projects are all part of this exciting year. This course is also the foundation course for our school’s DECA chapter, a co-curricular national marketing association. Students are encouraged to join and participate.

SPORTS MARKETING (5160)

Grades 9-12 Half Year, .5 Credit Prerequisite: None

This half-year course is designed for students with an interest in the sports industry and its related careers. Marketing is the tool that has allowed the United States economy to be one of the most successful in the world. Introductory business and marketing concepts are covered throughout this course with a focus on the multibilliondollar sports industry. Additionally, marketing has also made the sports and entertainment industries important 16 Smithtown Central School District • 2023-24 Course Guide parts of our modern economy. Fans and companies spend billions of dollars each year on sports, while entertainment is one of the largest exports the U.S. offers to the rest of the world. Utilizing the specific environments of both industries, students will be introduced to the basic marketing principles and components that are used in our economic system. The exploration of these principles will be studied and applied in an active, hands-on participative environment, through class projects, internet simulations and general classroom lectures.

FASHION MARKETING (5130)

Grades 9-12 Half Year, .5 Credit

Are you curious about fashion designers, models, hair and makeup artists, and celebrity styles? This course is designed to give you the latest information on the trends which will affect every aspect of how you look and dress. Students will be introduced to the terminology and fundamentals of the fashion industry. Introductory business and marketing concepts are covered through this course with a focus on the multibillion dollar fashion industry. Fashion industry speakers and field trips help to enhance the learning and application of concepts covered in class.

FASHION APPAREL & ACCESSORIES (5135)

Grades 9-12 Half Year, .5 Credit Students may elect to take the course for 3 college credits from LIU Post. Prerequisite: None

Students will see the place of apparel and accessories in the world of fashion design and merchandising. Students study the manufacturing of materials and the evolution of apparel through the history of costumes. Students become familiar with the buying, merchandising and marketing of all accessory classifications. These include handbags, shoes, jewelry, gloves, neckwear, belts, millinery and cosmetics. Students become versed in designers and accessory terminology, and they explore the various stages of display development.

ENTERTAINMENT MARKETING (5180)

Grades 9-12 Half Year, .5 Credit

Members of the class may elect to take the course for 3 college credits from LIU Post.

Prerequisite: None

This course will focus on the marketing of various entertainment industries including, but not limited to, the music industry, live theatrical performing arts and television. This course will introduce students to the business aspect of the entertainment industry, which is a global multibillion dollar industry of individuals working in many different career capacities. There are people creating the music, working at record labels, distribution and publishing companies, and recording studios. Additionally, there are employment opportunities in the areas of artist management, promotion, production and legal counsel. In the live theatrical performance industry the scope of study will range from stage production to the marketing of performing arts events that can span from Broadway productions to dance productions. The television industry has a huge audience base, and this course will teach students how to market to those audiences to create successful shows such as Friends. Guest speakers and field trips will be utilized to provide a real-world connection with the materials presented.
