WALL STREET: INTRODUCTION TO INVESTMENTS (5042)

Grades 9-12 Half Year, .5 Credit Prerequisite: None

The class will explore and analyze the basic business areas of management, economics and finance in today’s global financial marketplace. Students will develop an introductory knowledge of the stock market (the ABCs of investing). The use of current events is stressed. This knowledge is applied to the challenges of investing. Students will relate how economic and business principles affect investments through guest speakers, a stock market contest on the internet and classroom lecture and activities.

MAIN STREET: PERSONAL INVESTMENTS (5520) Grades 10-12 Half Year, .5 Credit Students may elect to take the course for 3 college credits from Farmingdale State College. Prerequisite: None

Imagine yourself being able to achieve your personal financial dreams. This course will give you the opportunity to explore personal investment options beyond the stock markets. International finance and economics will be examined in a current context, including their impact and relationship to the U.S. financial markets. Students will review stock market investing concepts and learn more advanced concepts and strategies about the stock market. They also will be introduced to all types of investment classifications such as bonds, mutual funds, international investments, options and futures necessary to achieve a balanced personal investment portfolio. Guest speakers will update students on current events and careers in the financial field and will enrich their knowledge of investments.

COLLEGE BUSINESS LAW (5091)

Grades 10-12 Full Year, 1 Credit

Students may elect to take the course for 6 college credits from LIU Post.

Prerequisite: None

College Business Law is designed to have students learn and apply the fundamental legal principles behind criminal law, tort law and contractual law. Students will be engaged in upto-date legal issues that will be used to apply taught legal principles to these current cases. This course will explore legal issues such as marriage (family law), employment law, real estate (property law), corporate law and contract law, with the use of the internet and presentations from guest speakers. It is beneficial for students who will attend college and pursue a career in law, business administration or accounting.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP – VIRTUAL ENTERPRISE (5110) Grades 10-12 Full Year, 1 Credit

Students may elect to take the course for 6 college credits from LIU Post.

Prerequisite: None

Recommendation: Accounting or College Accounting, and College Marketing or Introduction to Business.

Virtual Enterprise is an international business simulation program that has students create and manage their very own virtual business. You, the students, take on the role of employees and will be involved in actual “on-thejob” work experiences, including sales, marketing, accounting, personnel management, etc. The only difference between the VE and an actual business is that no material goods are produced or real money exchanged. Students will work in one or more of the departments in the VE organization. In each department, students will be expected to work individually and as a member of a team to fulfill the responsibilities and tasks associated with their department. Students will develop initiative, creativity and responsibility, and enhance oral and written communication skills, as well as improve their ability to work on a team.

SPORTS MANAGEMENT (5165)

Grades 10-12 Half Year, .5 Credit

Students may elect to take the course for 3 college credits from Farmingdale State College.

Prerequisite: None

This course is designed for students who are interested in the daily operations and decision-making processes of their favorite sports team, or learning what it takes to be an executive in the sports industry. In this course, you will learn how teams are owned and operated within today’s dynamic global economy. Students will also be given a broad understanding of the sports business sector by exploring available career opportunities, the development of the sports management profession, and how to manage the pressures of human resources, ethics, societal influences and media relations. Utilizing specific environments from professional sports franchises and leagues, students will be introduced to basic managerial principles and philosophies through the context of the sports industry. The exploration of these topics will be studied and applied in an active and participative environment, through class projects, internet simulations and general classroom lectures.
